DNS or Domain Name Service is what does the magic of converting the domain name to an IP address. All the devices on the Internet have a unique IP address. That is how they are identified on a network. Imagine it like a huge Excel sheet where there are names in one column and respective IP addresses in another. This IP address needs to be updated whenever it changes.

For example, if Google.com decides to update its IP address tomorrow, and they forget to update the DNS, then you won't be able to reach Google.com anymore since the DNS server doesn’t know where Google.com is exactly on the internet anymore. Scary ain’t it? People would go crazy.

Luckily the DNS servers are updated frequently and things work smoothly.

The only problem is with the increasing number of devices in the world, the number of IP addresses is decreasing. We used to have IPv4 earlier but it soon got exhausted and now we have IPv6 addresses to cater to the increasing number of devices. Population problems.

Another way we managed to tackle this problem is via routers. Routers can create private networks that can connect multiple devices in the internal network. So your router will have 1 IP address externally whereas each device connecting to it will have internal private IPs.
