Minimalism in Action: The Kitchen Experiment

Minimalism is a journey of simple living. But it is not about selling away everything. It is identifying what matters in life and what does not. This identification goes a long way. It takes years to perfect this art.

But it is not that simple. It comes with discipline, effort and struggles. When you live with a family, it is hard to make others realise the power of this art.

Doing the Dishes — Case Study

Every kitchen has its way of functioning. For me, we used to leave our dishes in the sink and take them up the next day since we were very tired by the time we finished dinner. Even though this was working for us, it didn’t feel right. A big part of why we did that was because everyone else around us also followed a similar approach.

We wanted to change it. But who will do that? This was a result of years of practice. And changing that would need a long time. Or will it?

The Strategy

Since I was the one who was madly in love with minimalism, I thought why not give it a try? Every day post dinner we dumped all the plates into the sink. And I started washing them. I soon realised it was a herculean task. Since there were so many plates, washing them at one stretch meant giving oneself a backache.
